People who are hypothyroid have a slightly higher chance of harboring a malignancy within the thyroid nodule. Most hyper functioning nodules are benign. Regardless, most nodules that are larger than a centimeter need further evaluation. Medullary Thyroid Cancer is the term and annually people fall prey to such conditions.

2. Some forms of cancer are aggressive than others

The age and family history of a patient and the size of his or her tumor may determine how treatable, or how dangerous, the disease is. For e.g.; Anaplastic thyroid cancer, a rare tumor, is very aggressive with very high mortality. Types of cancer are important too.

3. A lump may not mean cancer

Discovering a nodule on your neck is not an automatic diagnosis of thyroid cancer since a lot of develops nodules many a times. Of these, only about 5 percent are malignant. Thyroid cancer is a very uncommon form of cancer.

4. Patients need follow-up care

Treatment usually involves removing the entire thyroid, an organ that produces vital hormones our bodies need to function properly. Because of this, thyroid cancer survivors need to take medication (usually via a daily pill) for the rest of their lives to replace these hormones. Thyroid cancer has the tendency to spread to the lymph nodes, many patients experience recurrences and require a second or third surgery according to a medical expert.

5. Thyroid cancer is almost always treatable

The good news is Thyroid cancer is treatable because most patients can be treated and live a relatively normal life. In fact, the 25-year survival rate for patients with papillary thyroid cancer, the most common type, is 95%.
