Makki Atta or yellow corn flour is made from dried yellow corn kernels. They are ground into a powder finer than corn meal. Makki atta is a common flour in India for making rotis. You must be devouring the sarson ka saag and makki ki roti combo especially now since it is the winter season. :)

The added advantage of makki atta is that it does not have gluten in it. It is a healthy alternative to wheat flour if you happen to be on a gluten-free diet. Apart from being free of gluten, it has a number of essential nutrients in it. So, to boost your vitamin and mineral intake, you must include this flour in your diet. Great source of zinc

Yellow corn flour or Makki atta is a great source of the mineral zinc. This particular mineral is important for the functioning of enzymes. Zinc is said to activate the enzymes that help regulate the activity of genes in your cells, boost the immune system and help in converting food into energy. It is also a part of cell membranes and protects them along with DNA and proteins from damage.

A single cup of makki atta can add up to 2 mg of zinc to your food which is 25% of the recommended daily intake for females and 18% for males.

Rich in iron

Makki atta also has iron to offer. Every cup of the flour has 2.8 mg of iron in it which meets 35% of the daily iron need for men and 16% for women. Iron gets incorporated into a protein called hemoglobin that is present in red blood cells. Hemoglobin promotes healthy circulation of oxygen. Iron is said to allow your cells to produce energy and helps white blood cells in fighting infection.

Contains carotenoids and vitamin A

Ever wondered where the golden hue in makki atta comes from? Well, it is because of the carotenoid content. Carotenoids are a family of yellow, orange and red pigments. They promote tissue function and fight diseases. Every cup of yellow corn flour adds 250 IU of vitamin A to your food. This meets 11% of daily intake for women and 8% for men.

Good fibre source

Yellow corn flour makes you’re your meal more filling as it absorbs water and swells up in the digestive tract. The fibre present helps in responding properly to insulin and control levels of blood sugar. It helps in lowering blood cholesterol too.

One cup of yellow corn flour has 8.5 g of fibre which meets 34% of the daily fibre need for women and 22% for men.
